I’m a biology major at the University of California at Santa Barbara. I got to use a $450,000 microscope. Think of it as an Aventador but one you use to take pictures of really tiny things and powered by science lasers.

( Full disclosure : I took a microscopy class and got to use this. I pay money to go school so there’s a bit of a bias. I didn’t take this review seriously and neither should you)

Exterior 7/10

Kinja'd!!!

It is very clearly an expensive scientific instrument and looks the part. Walking near it is intimidating. The lines flow cleanly but this 2007 instrument is starting to show it’ age.

Kinja'd!!!

Interior 0/10

Looking inside of this is a bad idea. It has more than enough power to make you blind. The infrared laser can cook your retina without you noticing that it’s on

Kinja'd!!!

Acceleration 10/0

Photons are emitted at the speed of light from the laser, so the acceleration is both insanely high because speed of light and 0 because it technically never accelerated and was always going that fast. I’ve decided to split the difference on the score and just divide 10 by zero.

Braking 3/10

If thrown from a truck at 60MPH, it would break apart and kinda skid over the road. Probably stops faster than my old MGB, but not very good

Ride 5/10

You sit on a comfy swiveling roller chair that you can use to scoot around the room quickly. It’s nice to sit on but the bolstering is awful. Taking any corners in this thing could prove very dangerous to anyone involved. At highway speeds, I would recommend motorcycle leathers because you’re probably going to fall off and die horribly and it will make identifying te body easier.

Handling 4/10

Handling is accomplished through this interface with a computer. This program scares me and I’m pretty sure has access to nuclear launch codes. A couple of wrong clicks and you can end up destroying expensive components

Kinja'd!!!

Toys 100/10

This thing allows you to visualize cells at very high resolutions very clearly thereby advancing science and humanity itself with each image.

Audio 2/10

It clicks and hums a bit, nothing too interesting

Overall Value : It’s less fun than an Aventador but takes much better images. I guess pretty good

Total: a+bi (It’s kind of complex)

Engine: 5 high powered lasers

Power: It does run on electricity

Transmission: Ummmmmmm Let’s just call it an automated manual

0-60 Time: Physics says I’m not allowed to ask nor answer this question

Top Speed: 671 million MPH

Drivetrain: There are many motors in several locations

Curb Weight: Heavy

Seating: 1 in front

MPH: yes

MSRP ($USD): $450,000 as equipped

Bonus Image, each one of these tubes is $10,000+

I think I’ve used that scope, though out setup want write as elaborate. Ours was a spinning disk confocal, and we had a couple of those oil immersion lenses. Nice images though!

You forgot to write about the self leveling air ride suspension!

I believe this one is raster scanning. How could I forget the microscope is bagged?

What is that and why am I so aroused by it?

I’ve got one of those in my man lab and several spare tubes.

Lol good write-up.

I’ve used electron microscopes (can’t be used for biology because sample needs to be conductive to examine), X ray diffraction, spectrometers and PVD chambers among other things. People keep saying that STEM is hard. But it can be so fucking cool :)

While we’re on the subject of cool but difficult things - so is earning enough to buy an Aventador. At least now, I can lease it if I live in it (or pay for driving experiences) :D

Take that! Liberal Arts majors :D (I’m kidding)
